Permission for a child to travel abroad: when it is required
According to Ukrainian law, a child under the age of 17 may travel abroad only if accompanied by an adult. Depending on the degree of kinship, a certain list of documents must be provided.
- If the child is traveling with one of the parents or guardians. The notarized consent of the other parent is not required; it is enough to have the child’s birth certificate.
- If traveling with close relatives (grandparents, stepmother, stepfather, or adult brothers or sisters). The child’s birth certificate and documents confirming kinship (not notarized). Parental permission to leave is also not required.
- Persons who are not relatives. If a child is traveling abroad with a third party, a written application from one of the parents (certified by the guardianship authority) or a notarized permission for the child to travel abroad is required. Additionally, you will need a child’s birth certificate and an adult’s identity document.
